in the corner stands an old wooden bookshelf

in the corner stands an old

wooden bookshelf

its dusty shelves lined with

hundreds of leather bound

books

tattered and aging

my hand runs along the fraying spines

reading names and dates

from a time long before

Emerson

Conrad

Whitman

it seems that this bookshelf

can answer any question

asked of it

has “The Poet”

found his

Heart of Darkness

in the Leaves of Grass?

my hand stops on the oldest

most tattered looking spine

and pulls it

out

I sit in the wood-carved chair

hoping to find the answers
